ABOUT FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. FGM, which is often carried out with unsterilized instruments, can cause severe health and psychological problems. In some cases, girls bleed to death or die from infections. Later in life, FGM can lead to complications in childbirth and increase the risk of the mother and/or baby dying. The practice also violates a women's rights to health, security and physical integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life when the procedure results in death.

It is our duty to protect and observe women rights, end the social, cultural and economic causes of Female Genital Mutilation and above of all, demand for action from governments. As you are reading this, there are between 8 and 10 million women and girls in the Middle East and in Africa who are at risk of undergoing one form or another of genital cutting and more than 125 million girls and women have been subjected to the ordeal.

TYPES OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

  • Clitoridectomy: partial or total removal of the clitoris (a small, sensitive and erectile part of the female genitals) and, in very rare cases, only the prepuce (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoris).

  • Excision: partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora (the labia are the ‘lips’ that surround the vagina)

  • Infibulation: narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and sewing over the outer, labia, with or without removal of the clitoris or inner labia. The closing over of the vagina and the urethra leaves women with a very small opening in which to pass urine and menstrual fluid. The opening can be so small that it needs to be cut open to be able to have sexual intercourse. Cutting is also needed to give birth and can cause complications which harm both mother and baby.

  • Other: all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping, stretching and cauterizing the genital area.

MUSIC AROUND THE WORLD
LVOCI raising FGM awareness

LVOCI exposes the practices and dangers of Female Genital Mutilation, presenting individuals with an opportunity to understand real consequences of this global practice around the world and inspire communities to end Female Genital Mutilation. This Project give partners a unique opportunity to meet girls and women who have been forced to undergo Female Genital Mutilation and know their stories. Partners will also have an opportunity to meet girls and women who have health complications after being forced to undergo Female Genital Mutilation, those that are at risk of being forced in this cruel ordeal and also meet families that have lost loved ones because of Female Genital Mutilation. We hope that exposing the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation will help generate worldwide efforts to end this global practice with awareness , support and proper educational opportunities.

We are excited about the future development and construction of the Creative Arts and Academic Center that will further provide education and support to those who are in danger of Female Genital Mutilation. The CAAC will become a staple within the community to inspire change, to develop the gifts and talents of the community and to educate the community and help end this cruel and life-threatening ordeal that women and girls are forced to go through. We would also want the CAAC to become a place of refuge for those who are affected by FGM. By exposing the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation and assessing the community needs, we can then mold plans to promote the pursuit of dreams and healthy living for these communities.

MUSIC International will not only bring awareness towards the issue of Female Genital Mutilation but will also serve as a remind to all of us in regards to our duty to end all other forms of social injustices against humanity.
